(Their business is breeding army remounts for a military that doesn't need many horses anymore. They need to concentrate on sheep and cattle ranching, but the father is ex cavalry and loath to give up the thing he knows best. )
Also, some of the things they do on the ranch may strike suburban readers as very rough. This is a perspective that will not hurt anyone to read about. The book takes place in the 30's. It's a different and interesting point of view in some ways, but the solution to a boy who can't settle down to personal responsibility and self discipline is timeless.
There is plenty to read for a youngster, and it holds up decades later.(less)
