Jess (oracle_of_madness) Rand was about to lose himself completely by using the Choedan Kal to destroy everything including the pattern itself. One of the last things Lews Therin says to him is that people are born again and fight for a second chance at life. Rand realizes that his own answer to the question his father asked him "why do YOU fight?" was to live to love again. he destroys the Choedan Kal for his second chance, to be allowed to love and once again laugh.

Maria Rose I thought he was going to use it to access the One Power but he realized that he didn't need to use the Choledan Kal to up his use of the power. He knew he needs to die to live again but he wasn't going to leave any tool around that the Dark One could utilize when the pattern continues, plus he got the answer--Why does he fight-- because he is going live again.
