As we negotiate the treacherous waters of life, we skip from one island to the next, hopefully headed in some discernible direction we like to think of as progress. The islands are those chapters where we've temporarily settled in some situation and must deal with the "natives", whoever surrounds us at the time, and the local terrain, friendly or hostile or both.

To be perfectly candid, I didn't give much thought to using 'archipelago' in the title, until I saw this question. I just had an image, a series of islands like Key West, Florida stretching from the present into the future. It seemed like a fitting image since this first book is about the beginning of the journey, where changes seem dramatic and profound. Later on we tend to get bogged down more, sometimes shipwrecked. Then we drink a lot.(less)
