Goodreads asked Susan L. Edelman:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Susan L. Edelman Be Your Own Brand of Sexy was inspired by a young woman I'll call Emma in order to protect her privacy. She's the daughter of a dear friend and called me for dating advice when she went off to college. She said, "Susan. The guys are asking me to come over and hang out. What does that mean?" I wasn't quite sure, but it didn't sound like dinner and a movie. Emma discovered that these guys were looking for a hookup. Traditional dating was practically nonexistent at her college. She was disappointed. I loved college dating, so it broke my heart that she was missing out on the experience. This wasn't what we had in mind with the women's movement and sexual revolution. We dreamed that women would be treated better, not that many men would simply take casual sex for granted. As a psychiatrist, I knew it wasn't just millennials who were struggling. I've seen women of all ages who let men take them for granted and ended up confused and heartbroken. So when Emma said, "Susan, you have to do something about this!" I knew she was right. Someone had to figure out how we got here and what we could do about it. We need a new revolution to create change. Join the Revolution! Be your own Brand of Sexy.
