There were a lot of things that inspired! For Elder's story, it was my desperation to be published, to be good enough. He wants to be a good enough leader; I wanted to be a good enough writer. For Amy's story, it was remembering the way I felt when I moved away to college, far from home, without knowing anyone. It was terrifying and freeing at the same time.
Harley was inspired by a combination of a student I knew while I was a teacher and my brother.
