madison asked Robert Beatty:

Why is "our character is not defined by the battles we win or lose, but by the battles we dare to fight," one of the themes?

Robert Beatty I find it profound that we get a deep glimpse into a person's character when he/she makes the decision to fight for what is right (or avoid the fight because it is difficult, dangerous, hopeless, etc.). That decision (which is completely internal to the person) is the moment at which that person begins to shape his/her own character. Whether he/she actually WINS the battle or LOSES the battle comes later, but we can already see what kind of person he/she is.
