Is it true that you have to get and agent for a big press? If so, wouldn't it be better for first time writers to go with the independent publishers?

Krystal Wade You generally need an agent to get you in front of a Big 5 editor, unless you meet the editor at an event, but knowing which path to take as an author is a personal choice. Some authors journey on a different path with each new book they write. What's better? That's subjective.
