Goodreads asked Michael Bronte:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Michael Bronte Hmmm. I'd say follow your instincts because there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there trying to take advantage of new authors. At least that's the way it was with me. But it's a new time in book publishing these days, and the dependence on agents and major publishers to get your work out there isn't as critical as it used to be. A determined author has the opportunity to get his work out-- if it's good. Most of those so-called experts didn't know their ass from their elbow anyway. You'll find out on your own if your stuff is any good.
