They're relatively similar. In this series, the differences between cultures are a stronger driving force of conflict because most of the series plays out in Lialls homeland after this book and Scarlet is not really wanted there. In "Nightrunner", the protagonists stay in Auraen is comparatively brief. Also, neither Liall nor Scarlet are thieves, so no spying or stealing business. This series is more concerned with how the politics and religions in this world work.
The character depth and emotions are equal between the series, in my estimation. Chances are, if you like the Nightrunner series you'll like this and vice versa.
I hope this helped, happy reading.

Actually not similar at all. Nightrunner has a lot more to its lore and background information about the different races and history of the land. This book here can't even paint me a picture of what the background is like for most of the time. Also, the premise of Nightrunner is NOT that it's an m/m series but a magic/mystery series.

Hmm... It's been a while since I last read Nightrunner... Keep in mind I may be wrong.
The gay romance in Nightrunner was kinda censored... Like 65% of it. and it was dull, and filled with homophobia.
The last thing you want from a homophobic/ gay novel is a dull um-passionate romance.
I'd have liked it better, had it been just adventure with a bromance.
In contrast to Nightrunner, this series have both. The adventure and the romance.
