Do you work on any pet projects that you work on just for fun (and just to remind you why you enjoy being and writer) and not necessarily for publication?

Hi Kay - good question. To be honest right now it takes so much time writing my novels that I don't often have the energy spare to work on personal things too. But having said that, I have lots of folders of ideas and doodles and half-thought out scenes, which are all sitting there ready to be used in one form or another. Most of them will never see the light of day, but I love scribbling them down nonetheless. I suppose all my books are pet projects of a kind, and I'm lucky enough to see them end up in print.

I read your books when I was 12 years old. 10 years later, I confess I still think of Bartimaeus whenever I see a hawk flying overhead. Your work impacted me as a young author. I have you to thank for instilling the urge to think and write creatively. This urge stays with me. What/who was your greatest inspiration for the trilogy? How did you approach the writing process?
