Goodreads asked Christopher Holshek:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Christopher Holshek Well, it’s like they say: "One thing leads to another." I explain a lot how I came to this book project in the introduction, which people can read online at Inkshares.com. It all started out as a motorcycle ride to mark my retirement from the Army and process those 30 years of service, mostly overseas, but also discover and reconnect with the land of my identity. The Project on National Security Reform, where I was doing some work, asked me to write a blog to capture my thoughts on what it means to be an American in today’s world – because I thought, on both personal and national levels, that was the main question Americans are going to have to find an answer to move forward. In truth, it’s a question every generation must find an answer to. So like John Steinbeck did when I was born, I decided to take my turn at it. Then my little blog became a little booklet, which people began to tell me: "Chris, this is a book with a great message – write it!" So there you have it.
