Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Lisa Guenther It was partly inspired by the drought and fire of 2002, and partly by a story someone once told me of a near-tragedy at Bright Sand Lake. The tragedy in the novel doesn't bear much resemblance to the tragedy that inspired it. It was more the idea that something tragic could happen at this lake that I knew so well.

Once Bea entered the novel, it really became about how violence against women still affects people in our society. How do the people left behind deal with such a tragedy? What is our responsibility to other people who are caught in tough situations? Those are a couple of the questions the book poses.
