Goodreads asked Math Bird:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Math Bird Well, we're all aspiring writers to varying degrees. We remain such, no matter how much success or disappointment we get along the way. Only our aspirations change.

I guess the best advice is to keep writing and reading.
Reading is critical, but reading as a writer. Most writers advise that reading is essential, but for writers starting out sometimes, it needs more clarification for the advice to be of any use.

So, here's my take on it. Reading, as in the sense, taking notice of and learning how the writers you like, or perhaps don't like, structure narrative, create sentences, uses verbs, and punctuation. How do they write dialogue? How do they create characters? Paragraph length, sentence flow, etc. These are things I take notice of when I'm reading.
