Mark Lawrence I didn't promote my books - the publishers did. That's one of the good reasons to accept a deal that offers you a far smaller percentage of a book's sale price than Amazon offers to self-published authors.

And by 'promote' I mean 'got it on bookshelves in shops' & 'sent copies to bloggers' & 'drew attention to the book by the mere fact they had put their reputation behind it.

With those headstarts I then began to promote my books by doing interviews with bloggers, running my own blog, using twitter and facebook, and coming on Goodreads. However, without some sort of kickstart it's very hard to get much notice doing just those things.
