Cornelia Funke Your German is good, Dawn!:) As for Basta - i think he is afraid of so many things and understands so little about himself and the world, that he desperately looks for ways to control it- an amulet for example can comfort such fear as it is something you can cling to. I also believe that Basta has not experienced much kindness in his life. He has no reason to trust the world and sees darkness, betrayal and cruelty everywhere. Which makes him once again long for things or beliefs, that can protect him from all the darkness he knows about.

Hello! I was just wondering 3 things -- 1. Is there any specific language you imagined meg and the other characters speaking - I remember they were near italy? 2. in my copy, it says that it was translated. was it in english? 3. How do get motivated to write? I love writing once I sit down and do it, but I find it hard to make myself. 4. Do you keep a journal?is it good for writers/ people looking to write?
