I think he is reaching beyond his own experience (as writers eventually have to do) and--with the exception of Tom's narrative about his relationship and marriage to Anabel, which has a ring of authenticity (from his point of view, of course)--the narrative suffers from artificiality. That said, I enjoyed the book.(less)
