Goodreads asked Samuel Marquis:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Samuel Marquis I'm a #1 Denver Post Bestselling Fiction Author and I'm not anywhere near giving up my day job. To be a fiction writer in today's world, you will need the dogged determination of a footslogger in Stonewall Jackson's barefoot brigade and the resilience of a presidential candidate. You must be relentless in your quest and write for only one reason: to write something truly memorable and great. If you are doing it to be the next great thing or write the next "The Girl on the Train" or "The Martian", you will fail. My first novel, "The Slush Pile Brigade" was the #1 Denver Post bestseller over "The Martian", which was #2. That doesn't mean anything. All that matters is that "The Slush Pile Brigade" is a good book, a fun and entertaining read, and something that I can take pride in. And that's the only reason to write books.
