Nicholas Macias asked this question about The Glass Castle:
Though Rex Walls was a drunk, why did he let other men touch her daughter? Even the laziest of fathers protect their daughter like they are a prized possession, but Rex Walls didn't even go with her to a secluded bedroom upstairs with more than one person. This scene dumbfounds me because of that reason as well as Rex allowing the men to fondle Jeanette between games.

My father left and my mother didn't care about her three children, all of her energy was consumed with bitterness, jealousy and rage. She wasnt a good mother even before he left, he did most of the cleaning, cooking, shopping, bathing, dressing of us. She was never nurturing to us or him, but she adored her dog. I think she was a litte lazy. She did the least amount of work it took to make us look normal to the rest of the world. She had a small trust fund and never had a job or career, she told us that education was a waste of money, and so was food because you could never be too thin. I think she was a little stupid. She had no problem lending me out to her family members to be a playmate or babysitterfor their children. My uncle started molesting me at age 10, she knew it, but never did anything because an accusation like that would have, in her family, interrupted her income. It would have put her finances in jeopardy. Later in life she admited she knew, but still blamed me for being too sexy as a child. (less)
