Is this a plausible portrayal of Rochester, or is he (however little) twisted in order to fit the message of the book?

He was young, naive and made a big mistake marrying Antoinette and he hated himself for the way he treated her - I think this book made an impressive attempt to show how the misunderstandings and culture clashes could result in a failed marriage and two very damaged people. There is no doubt in Jane Eyre that when Jane first meets Rochester, he's angry, withdrawn and self-loathing. It seems rather fitting with how we leave him as they leave the West Indies. Jane draws out the best in him whereas Antoinette brought out the bad. Haven't we all experienced that? (Although granted I never locked any of my crappier boyfriends in the attic to avoid them).(less)
