Is it necessary to have read all the previous books in this series to read this one? I was given this book by a friend who was moving out of state and didn't want it anymore and I would like to read it but I don't know if I want to read all the books preceding this one.

It's not a series. Robin Cook wrote a lot of hospital dramas and they all have some of the same plot elements. so it might seem like a series but it isn't.
