Why is this book so popular when it is a lengthy, rambling mess of stories interspersed with lectures about race, society and culture? What happened to the idea of a great STORY, characters the reader can care about, conflict, rising action, etc.???

Yes, they are both flawed, but isn't that what makes us human? I think the bigger question is why are you so afraid of feeling something outside of your bubble? I actually did care about the experience of a Black immigrant in America. It's something I might not have experienced otherwise. (less)
