It was actually based on a woman I met when a family member was sick. I was scared and alone, and this woman--a stranger--came up to me in a store. She put her hand on my arm and told me that I would all right. That I wasn't alone. And that I needed to get home and be with my loved one in that instant.
I turned around and walked out of the store, feeling comforted and stronger. Years later, she was my inspiration for the Forgotten in the book. Because thinking back on it, I didn't see her talk to anyone else. And I almost wondered if she was my guardian angel. :)

Do you ever feel concerned that your book, The Program, is sending the wrong message to young adults about suicide? The themes in your book express that people should fear talking about suicide or mourning for the loss of loved ones, because they may start to feel suicidal themselves. Further more, the book talks about suicide as though it is a disease that someone can catch like a cold.
