A Goodreads user asked Diana Gabaldon:

What software program do most writer's use to submit their work? What do you recommend in finding the right agent to help a writer market their book to publishing companies?

Diana Gabaldon Any word processing program is fine; the only thing it has to do is provide a readable text file, and they all do that.

As to agents...you want an agent who's been in the business long enough to be knowledgeable, who has a good reputation, and who handles (and likes) the sort of book you write.
