Vanessa Haynes I helped raise my sister, & I gave this to her to read when she was around 11-12. She loved it, because it's a story of a self-reliant kid, going on an adventure. Was he scared? Sure. But he faced his fears, & carried on with what he had to do. It taught her that you're more capable than you realize, face your fears and carry on. I think most kids today in the 10-12 year old age range would be able to handle this book.
Danijela No. It is full of ugly scenes, fillthy words and violence.
Eric White I would also have to say NO. There's a lot of violence and gore, plus a few creepy sexual insinuations regarding children during the hitchhiking portions of the story. I remember there being a fair amount of bad language as well. It can get pretty dark at times. I'd say this story would be more appropriate for late-teens and adults.
Gordon Ralph all i can say is it depends on the 10 year old !...there's nothing particularly yucky or sexually explicit in it, but a bit of violence now and again ! so if your child has read SK books before there shouldnt be a problem .....i was about this age when i read James Herbert (rip!) and SK ...no probs for me !
Kenneth Buff Lots of adult language, weird questionably racist stuff. Definitely a dated book.
Evan I am that age right now. I have read lots of stephen king books but it depends on the kid. I am fine with SOME this stuff but some kids aren't. I would not recommend it if you don't want to read the stuff other people said. But i love the book and i can't wait to read Black House.
Bob I don't think it's appropriate for a 10 year old....there are strong horror elements, violence (including some child abuse), cursing, and a few sex jokes/references (no actual sex though).

However, the story is really good (one of my favorite books)...so I'd definitely recommend it for teenagers and older audiences...and an older audience would appreciate the story's nuances more. Also I think the story will really resonate with any teenager that has been through some hard times in life.
Stephen I've heard of people reading SK at age six, but it really depends on the maturity level.
Alix It's very dark and violent. I would say no. I read that kind of thing around that age, but I shouldn't have. I just wasn't warned.
Mimi Not by any stretch of the imagination. It is X-rated in terms of violence, language, sexual content, and disturbing imagery. Many adults would be shocked and disgusted by the scenes and language in this book.

Any parent asking this question should try reading the book him/herself first.
Maria Rose A precocious 10 year old who is reading SK books at the higher reading understanding should have no problem as it is definitely not a Winnie the Pooh tale. It is a dark fantasy tale.
Jessica There were a lot of penis jokes in it, but no actual sex. I thought it was kind of gruesome at the end. I wouldn't let my 10 yr old read it.
Mattias Lönnebo Most 10 year olds would have difficulites grasping many of the details, implications and parts of the story. I say its a book for teen and adults.
