My favorite book of all time is Ella Enchanted, and before I ask you a question I just wanted to say thank you for having such a profound impact on my life as a kid. My question is though, was there anything specific that motivated you to write Ella Enchanted? Were there ever times when you were discouraged or didn't think it would go as well as it did?

Gail Carson Levine Thank you! The motivation was a writing class. I had to write something! The inspiration was BEAUTY by Robin McKinley. I never expected it to go as well as it did!
