Right, so I'm one of those poor USA dwellers who has to wait a ridiculously long time for the release of the third book, so while I wait, who else should I read? I'm not the biggest fan of G.R.R. Martin or Joe Abercrombie (both are too depressing for my tastes) , but I've loved your books...

Hi David,
Thanks for the message - Ruin's out in the USA on 13th October 2015, so not too long to go. In the meantime, though, book recommendations not including GRRM and Mr Abercrombie…
Bernard Cornwell's 'Warlord ' series, a trilogy, starting with 'The Winter King,' which is his take on Arthur. It's one of my all time favourite reads, feeling very historical but with an edge of mysticism. Can't recommend this enough!
J. V Jone's 'Sword of Shadows' series is great - epic, character driven, love it (the series isn't finished yet - four books written so far).
Adrian Tchaikovsky 'Shadows of the Apt' series - ten books long, but each one is a cracking read.
Miles Cameron's 'Traitor Son cycle.' Medieval mercenaries - feels very historical, based on the 100 Years War, I think, with added wyverns :) Great stuff.
Mark Lawrence is a wonderful writer, but if GRRM and Abercrombie are too dark for you, then Mark probably isn't for you either. I would say try Abercrombie's Shattered Sea trilogy - it's technically his stab at Young Adult. I really enjoyed it - it's classic Joe without the x-rated stuff, and much less bleak than his earlier stuff.
Hope that helps, David.
Best,
John

Big fan of Malice, really pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. In the process of getting Valour. The books have a very strong Celtic vibe to them especially Corban's own people. What drew you to this culture in particular rather than the more standard pseudo medieval world of a lot of fantasy universes?
