Good question. I wondered that several times. I just finished for the third time. At first I thought she had some brain aneurysm or something. On rereading, I think she was walking on the bridge which collapsed beneath her. This was why James took it so badly, because he was the one who wanted to build it.
That doesn't explain why she drowned though. Diana had previously said the pond wasn't deep enough to drown in. The autopsy said she hadn't been drinking. Sparking rumours that she committed suicide. I don't know, maybe there was mud in the pond and she got stuck? Maybe the rain made the pond too deep. It's very much open to interpretation.

That's an interesting idea. I thought she was walking on the remains of the bridge that the boys built, then fell off and drowned. But it is strange that she didn't struggle. Had she been drinking?
