Never finish a book you're not enjoying, life's too short.

That said, part of the problem might be that this is the second book in a series. You could try starting with The Fellowship of the Ring, maybe that would help. But if you're not interested in books about mythology and folklore and history, then I sort of feel like this just isn't the right book for you.(less)
