I was able to fully understand The LOTR without having read The Hobbit. When I finally did read The Hobbit, I enjoyed it, however, I still like LOTR better. Whenever I do my annual reread, I usually go ahead and read The Hobbit first. Sometimes, I even read The Silmarillion first, then The Hobbit, followed by The LOTR. I think it's cool to see how Middle Earth and its people change over the course of the stories. It's truly epic.(less)
