Goodreads asked 'Nathan Burgoine:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

'Nathan Burgoine "In Memoriam" (a novella included in ON THE RUN, edited by Jerry L. Wheeler) is my most recent work, and the idea came from a few things. One - the anthology had a theme of pursuit and chase, and I wanted to do a story where someone had screwed up a good thing and wanted to make amends (I'm a sucker for second chances).

Two - it also came from a discussion that sprung up when I'd posted a song lyric that included "everything happens for a reason" and a good-natured dialog occurred. I hate that phrase. I think it belittles so much suffering, and it drives me mad.

Three - alongside my love of second chances is my love of things just to the left of the natural world. So I decided the man chasing for another shot at his first love was going to be doing so in a very different way, and on a very tight deadline (literally - he's just been diagnosed with terminal cancer). But the tumors ruining his memory and sense of time are also doing something else to him that gives him a chance to make it right before he runs out of time.
