I have already read Generation Kill by Evan Wright, which follows Lt. Fick and the First Recon Marines in the Iraq War. Would you still recommend this book, or is it mostly the same thing?

Aurélie Not the same thing! Fick's book starts way before the events of Operation Iraqi Freedom, when he first enlisted and he describes his training and things like that (there are some hilarious moments early in the book actually). Then there's the part on OIF which gives a different perspective from Evan Wright's and the book goes a little beyond that, when 1st Recon got back home. I thought both books were complementary and One Bullet Away is definitely worth reading if you liked Generation Kill, I think. Also, Nate Fick seems to be a pretty admirable man and his book is further proof of that. That's just my opinion, though.
Lilkidneys Concur with Au. GK and One Bullet are complementary. The former is an outsider's account of his observations of the Marines in this unit. IMO it's about as close as you can get to being in the Marine Corps. In One Bullet, you get inside the LT's head. Fick talks about what led him into the Corps, and shares what was going on in his head and heart throughout his combat experiences in Afghanistan in 2001-2002 and in Iraq in 2003. GK only deals with the Iraq war. Nate also shares what led him to leave the Marines and his experiences trying to assimilate into civilian life. A powerful moment near the end is his confrontation of a quote Evan Wright printed. GK was hilarious. One Bullet is more cerebral and thought provoking, but it is tightly written and easy to digest. The audio versions of both these books are outstanding.
Vincent Also don't miss Sniper One by Mills, one of the best books on war.
