Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, #1):
I was wondering if Assassin's Apprentice could be read as a stand alone book. I know this is the first book in a trilogy, which is in turn the first set in a series, but sometimes first books are written so they can be read by themselves. Is this one of them?

I think this one does, much more so than A Song of Ice and Fire or the Kingkiller Chronicles. It ends with a sense of a caesura.
