I was wondering if Assassin's Apprentice could be read as a stand alone book. I know this is the first book in a trilogy, which is in turn the first set in a series, but sometimes first books are written so they can be read by themselves. Is this one of them?

I think I know what you mean... Many series feel like they are one massive book split up at arbitrary points.

I certainly think that this book stands well on it's own. All of the major plot points are resolved in a satisfying way. Nothing feels unfinished, but it's also good enough that I can't imagine stopping after the first one.
