Goodreads asked H.R. Jakes:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

H.R. Jakes All writing is essentially didactic, so, first, take stock of who you are and what your message is. If you conclude that there’s a pretty good chance that your message is ignoble, think twice before disseminating it by writing. I (You) can always just disseminate nonsense by standing in a subway and proclaiming it loudly. If you’re writing merely to titillate, to make money, to assuage guilt, to get famous, do something else. But if you’re the one in a thousand with something profound to say, then write it with all your might and pay no heed to those who would dissuade you or criticize your work without substantiating the criticisms.
