Picked this up at a book fair. Do I need to read the others in the series or is it okay as a stand alone?

Denise You can certainly read it as a stand alone, there is no info that you need to know that can only be gotten from earlier books. However, if you want to read the series from the beginning, this book will give a few things away about the characters.
Ali The Amelia Peabody Series was published in chronological order only through book 10 and then it jumps around a bit. So while it's published book #16 it's actually #11 in order of events. As Denise says, each of the books are stand-alone (not a lot of cliff hangers) so you could start anywhere, but I'd recommend backing up to at least book #7 "The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog" where you'll be introduced to some of the key characters that are repeated throughout the series.

Here's a list of the series in chronological order if that helps at all.

1 Crocodile on the Sandbank (1884)
2 The Curse of the Pharoahs (1892)
3 The Mummy Case (1894)
4 Lion in the Valley (1895)
5 The Deeds of the Disturber (1896)
6 The Last Camel Died at Noon (1897)
7 The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog (1898)
8 The Hippopotamus Pool (1900)
9 Seeing A Large Cat (1903)
10 The Ape Who Guards the Balance (1906)
16 Guardian of the Horizon (1907)
19 A River in the Sky (1910)
11 The Falcon at the Portal (1911)
20 The Painted Queen (1912)
12 He Shall Thunder in the Sky (1914)
13 Lord of the Silent (1915)
14 The Golden One (1916)
15 Children of the Storm (1919)
17 The Serpent on the Crown (1921)
18 Tomb of the Golden Bird (1922)
