The author has said in interviews that the wurse is not a dog, but a nurse, which is a supernatural being. Which is also why it can eat chocolates, unlike dogs.

Funny that just came upon this post. I just posted about a conversation I had with the author regarding the wurse on my blog. It's in my review of his new novella here: http://litwitwinedine.com/2016/11/18/...
And to see a video of my actual wurse: http://litwitwinedine.com/2016/04/21/...

In chapter 30, Elsa refers to the wurse as a dog when asking why Britt-Marie didn't let the police know about it. Britt-Marie is scared of dogs. As far as his lifespan, I agree with the others - he is a supernatural being.
Abigail
I like the idea that the wurse is just a large supernatural dog but I need to know exactly how big it is.
Christine
The wurse is a dog, but it is also a magical creature. On page ninety three when it says the princess was playing with the wurse babies, it refers to them as puppies.

I thought chocolate is not good for dogs(Elsa givin it chocolate daim), that is why I thought it might be something else.

Honestly, I never really thought the wurse was part of the original litter of puppies. Possibly a descendent, but that didn't really fit either.
Elsa thought this dog was a mysterious secret from everyone, but I think at least some of them knew about Granny's dog.

I agree with those who say he is a supernatural being :)

He's a 'Cur'. Alf says as much when he's talking.

I don't think he was a dog but more of a supernatural animal. And since this was part fantasy he could live forever.
