This isn't a question :-) just wanted to say that your Fiona Griffiths series is my absolute favorite contemporary mystery / police procedural / thriller series. And I read so many books in those genres I'm actually starting to run out. Please keep going, and keep up the incredible quality of your plotting, writing, and characterization. Finally, do you feel any pressure to write faster? I hope not.

Wow! Well, thank you! And what very fine taste you have, if you don't mind me saying so. As for pressure to write faster . . . no. I'm committed to writing a book a year which suits me fine. I tend to spend the summer thinking. Then start writing in earnest in autumn (fall). Then have a complete draft by about March. Spring is spent tidying up, and so it goes round. Every single time I finish a book, though, I think "this is the last half-decent thing I'll ever write! Aaargh! I'm finished. That, roughly, is the stage I'm at now . . . "

After reading Talking to the Dead, which I found really lovely and startling, I wondered how someone could craft so polarizing yet compelling a character that even prim young Catholics like myself found her irresistible. I normally take a secret pleasure in heroines who resemble make-believe-heroine-me, but Fi is quite different from that. I guess my question is, what did you focus on most when crafting Fi?

I enjoy your Fi Griffiths books very much, and was excited to find "The Dead House" recently. I'm about 10% into it love it so far. One observation - and this may change as I progress thru the book - but it seems, over the past couple of books, that Fi's illness is sort of receding into the background as a major motivating factor in her work and life. Am I way off base on that? Anyway - thanks for the books!
