Claire Fuller I'm happy for readers to interpret things however they like, (that's why I left some things ambiguous) but I think that James did intend to kill them. I don't think he could see any other way out of the situation he had got them into. He also writes a list of plants on the wall some time before this, and these are all poisonous plants.

And I'm pleased you looked up Korsakoff's syndrome. Although it is more common amongst alcoholics, people who have a lack of vitamin B1 also suffer from it, and the symptoms can include hallucinations and false memories.
