This is the first manga by Junji Ito I've read. Did it really scare you? I wasn't scared at all. Why is Junji Ito considered as a master of the horror genre? Are his other mangas more or less scary than Gyo?

As Janna said, Gyo is not scary at all. Check out more of his one shots, those are actually scary. Also, most of his horror is psychological, and you tend to think they're more scary after thinking about them.

This is not scary at all, just disgusting. If you really are looking for something SCARY, go check out 'Long Hair in the Attic'. There are actually a lot more that are way too scary, disturbing, violent, and gory. You should check out all his works!
