How do you get inspired to write?

Jon D. Kurtz "Inspiration" is a cliche in writing. To me writing is an enjoyable release for the clutter banging around in my mind. (It also saves others from watching my head explode.) As for motivation, I base my writing on past experience. Twenty-seven years in law enforcement provides considerable fodder for the presses.
