How did you get the idea for Smoke? How do you name the characters in your books?

Catherine McKenzie I got the idea when someone I know's house was being threatened by a wildfire. Usually the names just come to me, but sometimes I look up popular names on the internet, or scan my bookshelf - especially for last names.
