Tiffany Vo asked Shannon Messenger:

When you work on a chapter or write anything in particular, do you create an outline before hand?

Shannon Messenger Not generally. Every writer works differently, but for me, I've found that the more I pre-plan, the more I suck the life out of the story. I do SOME planning, but more on a "whole book" level, meaning I generally know my ending and several major turning points before I get started. But I don't outline the finer details of how all of that will be accomplished, especially on such a specific level, like chapter by chapter. I save that for revision, when I'm trying to make sure each chapter is as strong as possible, once I've already let the story unfold.
