This is easy. I write non-fiction, so what I do is 1: spend some time thinking about what are the most interesting things in the world to me at present, 2: pick one, 3: write a proposal that hopefully conveys what is so interesting about the subject I selected, and if all goes well, 4: write a book about it.
The pleasure of spending a couple of years immersed in a subject you were dying to learn about can't be exaggerated.
The bad part: when you are in-between books and there is no guarantee that you will get to write another. (Where I am now!)
