Susan Swiderski asked Litty Mathew:

I wanted to let you know I received your book in the mail. (Which I won in a giveaway.) As per your note, I listened to the interview with you, and heard the duduk music. I'd never even heard of this instrument before, but now I am completely enamored with its haunting sound. Just beautiful! Is this instrument ever used to play more lively upbeat music, or is it solely used for slower, heart-wrenching pieces?

Litty Mathew Hi Susan,

Isn't it the most soulful instrument?

The duduk is often used to play wedding music but it's usually the zurna, another woodwind with a sharp, piercing sound, that plays the melody.

In talking to duduk players, who get defensive ;-), they think the duduk gets painted into this sad corner. But I think rightfully so. It's such an emotional sound. I just don't say it when they're around!

I'm so glad you had a chance to listen!
