It's all about the outline! Also, the schedule that I'm on with my publisher means that I'm editing one book while writing the next. That gives me two manuscripts to work on at the same time which means I can layer things into book 2, for instance, if I think of something cool and want to set it up for book 3. But most of time, I've already determined that I won't pay off certain things brought up in book 1 until book 3--that's just how I like to write. The more convoluted the better!! ;)
