Shelly asked Brian Staveley:

You have a great vocabulary. Where do you think you picked up all the unusual words in your book? Do you make an effort to include them or is it how you write naturally?

Brian Staveley The language comes naturally -- just the result, I think, of a lifetime of reading. One of the interesting struggles that comes up quite a bit is when I have the perfect word for a scene (travois, for instance) but people tell me that it's too obscure, that it pulls them out of the scene as it's unfolding. As a result, I'd say that I tend to edit OUT some of the more unusual vocabulary, rather than trying to find a way to fit it in. But travois is still there ;-)
