Goodreads asked Michael J. Bowler:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Michael J. Bowler Spinner, my latest book - a teen horror/mystery - was inspired by the learning disabled teens I taught for so many years at the high school level. I realized that almost no books feature teens with disabilities as the heroes. My main character, Alex, has been in a wheelchair since birth and also suffers from learning disabilities. But he has an innate "gift" that makes him very valuable to certain groups of people, and none of those people want to use his ability for good. His misfit classmates gather vow to protect him and solve the mystery of who is after Alex and why. I'm excited to show readers that kids with disabilities are just as valuable to society and just as human as their non-disabled peers, and hopefully I can dispel some of the prejudices people tend to have about "special ed" kids.
