Goodreads asked Harrison Hayes:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Harrison Hayes Losing my father to cancer was a crushing experience. I watched him suffer without being able help or really understand the extent of his anguish. I imagined what I would do if I could take his place and save him.

Would I? How would I live if my days were numbered? Would the knowledge I saved someone I loved, make up for the sadness of giving up my own life? The story kept forming inside me (as a coping mechanism, I imagine) until I had to write it out. Every character in The Refugee Sentinel is 95% based on a real person and yes, I'm in it too.

Sooner or later we all have to deal with our personal versions of Defiance Day. How we do it and how much of ourselves we save in the process defines who we are and what we're made of.
