Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Jennifer L. Kelly I'm not really sure where I got the idea. I knew I was going to participate in NaNoWriMo with my students and I had some opinions on government and always have been interested in dystopias and the post-apocalyptic world. Lucia is a lot like me--or how I want to be--and I think that really helped me get the story going and the other characters and ideas just kind of evolved out of Lucia's life, hopes, and expectations. I also am a huge fan of Emily Dickinson and that played a role in my novels. Other inspiration came from books like The Giver, Divergent, Hunger Games, and Matched. I love a good YA novel!
