If you're writing with an eye to publishing, read the kinds of books you hope to write. Get an idea of what publishers are choosing to spend their time and resources producing and promoting. Be humble. Realize that editors are there to help make your book better, more salable. They know the market well. Trust them. Most of all, have fun with it. Enjoy the whole process from inspiration clear through. If you don't have the enjoyment of writing, you don't have anything.
